York Attractions
The Royal York Hotel is one of the best-located hotels from which to enjoy the historic city of York. Memories of its Roman, Viking and Medieval heritage abound and serve as a major visitor draw for the city.

At its heart is the awe-inspiring York Minster Gothic cathedral, which is both a beautiful religious monument and a testament to medieval architectural design. The Minster is open daily for both services and visitors (Tel: 01904 557216). Visitor entry is charged but there is a free guided tour available. An easy way to see a little of the city and appreciate history at the same time is to take a walk along the City Walls. Once used to protect York from invaders, the 2.5 miles of walls now provide a great opportunity to view the city from a different perspective.

Another popular attraction is the Jorvik Viking Centre (Tel: 01904 543400). Filled with remarkably preserved artefacts discovered in York, Jorvik presents an interactive experience allowing visitors to enjoy a multi-sensory experience of Viking life in York several centuries ago. Jorvik is a fun day out for the whole family. The Jorvik Centre is also responsible for the annual Jorvik Viking Festival (Tel: 01904 543403), a citywide celebration including such events as re-enactments, arts and crafts, and traditional Viking displays, which takes place every February.

The Shambles offers a taste of 16th century York as well as a chance to enjoy some retail therapy. The Shambles is an extant medieval street, just one of the narrow and winding lanes that characterise the centre of York. The street is filled with Elizabethan-built buildings that lean precariously towards the middle of the road. Formerly the site of York’s butcher district, the original shops are now home to some of the most popular shops in the city.  Finally, York Racecourse (Tel: 01904 620911) sits only a mile or to south of the city. There are monthly meetings but the highlight of the York horseracing calendar is August’s famous Ebor Festival.
